Son metindeki tahhut kelimesenin anlami karsilamak icin yeterli olmadigini dusunuyorum. Eger ikinci cumleyi oncelikle dusunecek olursak,Denis, yeni buyuk bir hareket baslattiginda, ilk cumlede olumsuz olan ne varsa ondan daha fazla yapmasini gerektirecek bir hareket olmali bu. Eger sorun politik taahhutler ise bu, Denis in daha fazla taahhut vermesini gerektirir ki daha fazla taahhut vermek bir anlam ifade etmese gerek. Ben burada politik onem/ilgi tercumesinin daha uygun olacagini dusunuyorum. Boylece Denis in yapmayi dusundugu harekette arttiracagi "sey" uzerinde konusulabilir birsey olacaktir.
Ayrica bastan ve sondan birkac fazla cumle gormek te isimize yarayacaktir.

You can use "çağırıyorum" (for "I challenge") or "çağrıda bulundu" (for "He/she challenged") when the word is used to mean "I encourage you to try something that is really hard". These options are definitely not as strong as "challenge" itself of course, but they may be helpful.

I do a lot of simultaneous translation, and many motivational speakers like to say "I challenge you to..."

What would be the best Turkish for this?

Size meydan okuyorum is DEFINITELY not right!

The English speaker means I want to encourage you to try something that is really hard, but if you do it will be really worthwhile

Firstly, congratulations on making such a good job on those translations. I especially liked the last one.

You've had a brilliant idea, which should be used as much as possible by all Turkish to English translators.

Although I think your translations are impeccable, and that most of the "corrections" made so far offered by the other two contributors
are not valid at all, may I suggest two tiny comments?

In c) "Shell Turkey's" or "Shell's G.M. for/in Turkey";

in the next example: for "bir ilke daha"
you might put "again setting a new precedent"

Hi and thanks for your message on my blog. Well: co-operation is essential for freelancers, in particular when you concentrate on particular language combinations. I am not sure I understood how you want to co-operate and therefore I would like to discuss this by e-mail. Probably there are more possibilities than you can imagine.
Btw. I find it quite strange that I cannot insert the URL of my blog in the Site/Url field so I link to the translator's portal of our foundation (not for profit).

İlginiz ve yorumunuz için teşekkür ederim Özgür Bey; insanların dil konusundaki bakış açılarına saygı duyuyoruz. Ne var ki "makuz" ile "mütercim" kelimelerinin sözlük açmayı gerektirecek kadar eski kelimeler olduklarına kesinlikle katılmıyorum. Ayrıca dilde yerleşmiş sözcük öbekleri vardır; "makuz" ile "kader" birlikte çok iyi gider mesela; hatta Atatürk'ün özdeyişlerinden birinde de geçer. Bir sözcük vadesini dolduruncaya kadar kullanılabilir diye düşünüyorum ben.

Dilinize sağlık. Güzel özetlemişsiniz. En sevdiğim cümle şuydu "Yaptığı işin bilincinde olan, çevirdiği metne biraz dikkat edip bağlamdaki anlamsızlığı fark eden bir çevirmen" Görüşünüze katılmamak elde değil ama bu 'çeviri' meselesinden çok bir karaktersizlik hatta ahlaksızlık meselesidir. Bugünlerde ahlak biraz demode olmuş ama başarısızlığın çoğunda bir ahlak problemi vardır.

I have a number of comments regarding the sample translations .

A) The most significant works in the Venice Biennial will be taken outside the borders of Venice, a first in the biennial’s 110 years history, and will be displayed with the title Venice-Istanbul at Istanbul Modern exhibition.

B) Publication rights for the magazine belong to Mr. Erbil ARKIN, director of The Colony Hotel, who has pioneered numerous novelties in the tourism sector of Northern Cyprus.
C) (i) Shell’s Turkey General Manager, as opposed to Shell’s Ape/Allgator/Skunk/Tiger General Manager? The correct way to translate that is “Shell Turkey’s General Manager” since “Shell Turkey constitutes a compound noun. A yet more appropriate and internationally viable equivalent of “ Shell Turkiye” is “Turkse Shell”.

(ii) In English one does not say Shell ! The correct usage is “ The Shell Oil Company”

I I would translate the text as follows:
The Shell Oil Company, by appointing Canan Ediboğlu as Turkse Shell’s General Manager, has become the first company in the fuel sector to have a woman general manager and thus setting a precedent.

D) We interviewed Meltem Erkmen who is the Director of Publications at Epsilon Publishing House for almost ten years, and spoke about editing and books. Meltem Erkmen has achieved great success in the selection of books that reach hundreds of thousands of readers.

E) Regarding the Stefanel collection, the translation has altered the emphases. Where did the “generous application of distinctive metallic thread” come from? It does not say so in the Turkish version. Furthermore, the use of “pinpointed” is ill fitted. I would revise the text as follows:

In its 2006-2007 Winter Collection Stefanel has created a virtual visual feast with its wide range of valuable special creations which are diversified by the use of metallic thread.

As a concluding statement I would like to reiterate that a verbatim translation does not always convey the correct meaning. A translation would be most accurate by conveying the essence in the most correct grammatical manner of the target language.

"Gecekondu" terimi için "shanty housing" terimini kullanıyorum. Zira, gecekonduculuk sadece Türkiye'ye mahsus bir "sorun" değil. Az gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkelerin çoğunluğu bu sorunla karşı karşıya. Kolaylıklar dilerim.

Kimi metinlerde "submitted for your perusal" ifadesine rastlamıştım. Ben de bu kalıbı kullanıyorum. Sizlere bu ve benzeri "baş belası" ya da ""diş ağrısı" hissi yaratan kelime ve kalıplarla çalışırken kolaylıklar diliyorum.

"Gereğini rica ederim" indicates that an an action is expected from the addressee. Therefore the most appropriate closing sentence would be "the above information/detail/elaboration is provided for appropriate action".

This is an idiom for many languages
literally. When I have this word
in front of me and staring at me;
I use "idiom form" of English and
say "to brake a new ground" or "break
ground".... this is a rigid/inflexible
saying. But of course, these are my
poor comments and carries only the wish
of being a help, if at all.
